John Kallas and I first met in our late teens. I was alone and banging on an old upright piano in a semi-empty venue somewhere in the mountains of San Bernardino. John noticed and came over to join in singing with me on a couple of tunes. Our voices and personalities blended easily. It was an immediate synergy, and it was clear that we shared a deep passion for the same music. We were both heavily influenced by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Hendrix, Cream, Santana, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and other great artists of the day.
We had each spent countless hours, days, weeks, and months living with our respective instruments in our hands, me on guitar and John on bass. We studied the records we admired, and listened to them to the point of obsession, trying to dissect and digest their nature and content. Our teachers were Hendrix, Clapton, Harrison, Stills, Bruce, and McCartney. Records were our main source of knowledge, as we were mostly self-taught in terms of our rock and roll education. Although, innate musical ability is obviously a prerequisite, it is clear to me that this kind of passion and commitment is the foundation for becoming a competent musician.
Over the years, our paths diverged from time to time, but we never really lost track of each other. We formed Broken Arrow in 2013, and have been rocking the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura, and San Bernardino County areas ever since.
